Everybody gets the story arc they deserve.
Kent Duvall, a faded reality show winner, just wants another chance at glory – to find his way out of his depressing life and back to his highlight reel. When a scandal is captured on camera at a charity event, he gets his shot, on a new jungle survival show with seven other contestants. Each of them has been cast as a type – Ruddy the bully, Miriam the nerd, Ashley the love interest – but everyone is more than they appear.
The contestants’ goals seem simple – survive the wild, build a raft, win treasure. But Beck Bermann, a reality producer who suffered her own public shaming, sees them as characters in her redemption arc.
As the schemes and strategies spiral out, breakout camps sabotage each other and rival producers struggle to control the storyline. Soon the question becomes less about who will win than who will make it out in one piece.

As a long-time Survivor fan, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first heard Stephen Fishbach was writing a fiction novel—especially one set around a reality show. But Escape! totally delivers. It brilliantly blends the thrills of an adventure story with sharp satire about the kinds of shows we obsess over, all while tapping into the messy psychology of competition, fame, and survival.
Stephen Fishbach has stood out as one of the most intelligent players the show has ever seen—strategic, analytical, and constantly thinking three steps ahead. What I didn’t expect was how naturally those same qualities would translate into a fast-paced, fascinating novel that kept me hooked from start to finish.
Escape! drops you right into a remote jungle island where the fictitious survival show, Escape!, is being filmed. The premise is gorgeous in its simplicity and complexity: a group of contestants—including faded former champion Kent Duvall—must endure harsh terrain, build strategies, forge alliances, and literally make their way off the island to win treasure. The longer they stay, the more money is added to the winning jackpot. It’s Survivor meets psychological drama with a twist of absurdity.
But what sets this apart is that it’s not just a game of physical survival. The novel also follows Beck Bermann, a disgraced producer trying to redeem her career and wrestle with the narrative she’s been given. Through multiple viewpoints—contestants and crew alike—Fishbach explores how reality TV is manufactured, edited, and consumed. You start to see that the “real” story isn’t who finds the idol or wins the challenge, but how every person on the island fights for agency, identity, a good edit, and escape—for reasons both internal and external. I will never be able to watch Reality TV with the same lens as before!

Escape! by Stephen Fishbach is an engaging and fast-paced read that offers a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the mechanics of a reality television show. Fishbach’s insider perspective clearly shines through, adding authenticity and intrigue to the story, particularly for readers who enjoy reality TV and are curious about what happens off camera.
One of the book’s strengths is its use of multiple perspectives. Experiencing the story through different characters keeps the narrative dynamic and adds depth, allowing you to see how the same events are interpreted in very different ways. This approach makes the book feel immersive and keeps the tension building as the action unfolds.
The characters were well-developed and not simply caricatures. I mean, the ‘characters’ themselves were caricatures in regard to what a reality show would have as participants (the alpha male, the hot chick, the nerd, the bogan etc) but Fishback did an excellent job of giving the people behind the ‘characters’ depth, personality and essence.
I found Escape! to be an enjoyable and compelling read. I would definitely recommend it, especially to fans of reality television or anyone curious about the strategic and psychological layers beneath the glossy surface of reality shows.

Escape! by Stephen Fishbach is a thrilling multi-voice adventure narrative that takes readers behind the scenes of reality television in a Survivor-esque show.
Eight contestants go onto an island for the chance to win a million bucks. Will they all make it out alive?
I enjoyed the pacing of the plot and the mystery around which characters could be trusted. The three main characters are likeable in their own ways and made me wonder how their stories would play out.
An engaging read!

If you have ever been sucked into the Reality TV vortex, Stephen Fishbach’s “The Escape” is for you. As a Survivor tragic I jumped right in ready to experience the highs and lows, the unpredictable weather and the constant strain of being monitored (not me) all from the comfort of my air-conditioned lounge room.
You really get to experience how far the contestants and the producers are pushed to get that unique, exciting, emotional television moment, which Stephen Fishbach is extremely qualified to write from his own personal experience. This was not an episode from a TV show but a smart, creative story with so much intense drama and exciting twists and turns I couldn’t wait to turn the page.
I loved that it still had a nod to the things that made Survivor great, but this was next level on the emotional toll it takes to make and participate in making television viewing for all of us couch potatoes screaming at the TV.

I thoroughly enjoyed this exploration of how narrative shapes reality within the context of reality television, for both contestants and the audience, depending on how each character is portrayed.
I loved the narrative shifts between the perspectives of both the contestants and the producer, so that we see the layers of the drama playing out both on screen and behind the scenes.
I enjoyed the detailed insights into the inner worlds and motivations of each character (written with a good hint of satire!) as the story unfolds to explore themes around ambition, identity, fame, and the complexities of human interactions.

From the opening pages, Escape! grips the reader with a fast, confident pace that immediately draws you in. Much like watching a compelling series unfold, I found myself forming early judgments about the lead characters and eagerly anticipating the directions their stories might take.
The narrative is cleverly structured, offering unexpected twists and turns that reveal life both in front of and behind the camera. This dual perspective adds depth and tension, constantly challenging first impressions and assumptions. What begins as entertainment quickly evolves into something far more complex.
Escape! is not simply about a show; it explores the high stakes surrounding it. Careers are built and destroyed, relationships are tested, and the consequences can be as serious as life and death. Engaging and thought-provoking, the book keeps you questioning where reality ends and performance begins, making it a compelling read from start to finish.

I normally wouldn’t pick up a book like this. I’m not a fan of reality TV, and I initially found it hard to get into the book. However, I persisted because of the way the writer was able to capture the personalities and feelings of the characters.
The manoeuvrings of the producers, Beck, Erika and Jacob to sensationalise the show with no regard for the contestants confirmed what I have always thought about reality TV; it is not REAL! It highlighted the addictive power of fame and how Kent would do anything to keep it.
Altogether, well written and kept me coming back.

If you are a fan of reality shows like Survivor, you will either love or hate this book. Reading what happens behind the camera puts a whole new light on these shows. This book exposes the production techniques and behind-the-scenes events for the reality show Escape. Producers prod the contestants and steer events to get the drama they want. But no one could foresee the outcome for Kent or Miriam. Great characters made this book addictive!

A book for all lovers of reality TV… It’s filled with drama, scandal, personal development, and a completely unpredictable finale. It wasn’t a ‘can’t put down’ level of intrigue, but I was always curious about where it was going. A story with no likeable main characters, where I was rooting for no particular person to win, but wanted to finish the season nonetheless.

I had high expectations for Fishbach’s book Escape! Having enjoyed watching numerous Survivor seasons, the premise had me intrigued. However, I did struggle to finish reading this book.
The main reason is that I found it difficult to connect with any of the characters. I wanted to cheer for/back someone, but couldn’t decide who. Unfortunately, in my opinion, there were too many unlikeable characters, and I had a hard time caring about any of them.
On a positive note, there were some thrilling aspects, and I did enjoy the multiple perspectives angle throughout the book. The insight into the behind-the-scenes questionable ploys used to portray and shape competitors was interesting. Fishbach draws from his own Survivor experiences to create his debut fiction.
I would recommend this for absolute die-hard Survivor-like reality game show fans.

Escape by Stephen Fishbach is a fast, clever thriller set on a remote island during a Survivor-style reality show. A group of contestants sign up for fame, strategy, and a shot at winning big. For some, it’s also a second chance at redemption – but things quickly spiral beyond the “just a game” vibe. Alliances shift, paranoia builds, and it becomes clear that not everyone is playing fair… or safely. Behind the scenes, producers are shaping and coaching the contestants, proving that not everything is as it seems.
If you’re a fan of Survivor, you’ll recognise the psychological chess match straight away. Fishbach (a two-time contestant himself) really understands how people think under pressure – the egos, the desperation, the hunger, and the calculations happening behind every conversation. The tension ramps up steadily, and you get to know not just the players but the producers influencing the game.
What I liked most was how grounded the characters felt. They’re flawed, competitive, sometimes unlikable, but believable. Escape! is a tense read that blends reality TV drama with real danger, and it keeps you guessing right to the end.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t the book for me. I personally didn’t really enjoy it that much. I got very frustrated by the way the contestants were being treated, and I also didn’t like the ending. Even though I know it’s a book of fiction, just knowing that this type of stuff could actually happen was so infuriating.
Despite not enjoying the book, I was still glad that I got the chance to read it: one, because it was a different genre from my normal reading, and two, as it opened my eyes even more to the ‘reality’ of reality tv. Yes, I’ve always known it to be edited and manipulated to a point, but this made me think even more about what could actually be going on that we, the viewers, don’t know about.
