This poignant book tells us about the animals that supported soldiers as Australia fought wars. All sorts of animals took on varying roles during the wars, even in modern times. Fiona White lists some of them for us. Horses, donkeys, mules, camels, dogs, pigeons, elephants and even cats. They have hauled goods across desserts, over streams and mountains. Simpson’s donkey, Murphy, was posthumously awarded the RSPCA Purple Cross for his service. Pigeons took messages to and from the front. In 1945 an Australian pigeon known only as DD43 T139 flew a life-saving message from a boat that had been damaged in heavy seas in New Guinea. Dogs were companions, trackers and also delivered messages in the trenches. The fearless Irish Terrier among them.

This is a priceless book that should be in all libraries. With teacher’s resources available it’s also perfect for the classroom. It tells the stories of animals that have made sacrifices in war for us. It’s moving, heartwarming, in many ways sad, but it’s beautifully told with pencil illustrations that cleverly convey times of war yet still give colour and warmth.

Importantly, we remember these animals and their courage and loyalty by wearing purple poppies on the National Day for War Animals (24 February).
