This story is a retelling of an ancient Chinese folktale.

In a distant land, the emperor is growing old and weary. With no children to inherit the throne, he must find someone worthy to succeed him and rule the kingdom.

Children over the age of five are summoned to the palace for a special contest. Each is given an egg and instructed to return it after 30 days. Excited whispers fill the air as the children wonder what might hatch from their eggs.

Young Ren carefully carries his egg home. His little brothers and father admire its beauty, and Ren names it Bao Bao. While his brothers dream about what might emerge, Ren tends to Bao Bao with constant love and care.

When Ren’s cousins visit, they proudly display the creatures that have hatched from their eggs. Ren continues to nurture Bao Bao, talking to him and wrapping him in a soft blanket. Meanwhile, more creatures begin appearing throughout the city. Yet, when the 30th day arrives, Bao Bao still has not hatched. What will the emperor say?

The gentle, surprising ending of this book reminds readers that true strength comes from patience, integrity and the courage to honour the truth. Tan’s illustrations enhance the timeless quality of the tale, evoking the warmth and magic of a story remembered from childhood.
