Tracy Deonn’s newest instalment in ‘The Legendborn Cycle’ is intense and fun.

Bree Matthews has deserted the Order of the Round Table, and allied with the Demon King Erebus and his two cambion familiars Zoe and Elijah. She hopes to master her Rootcraft magic and become truly unstoppable, but there’s a catch. Erebus has wiped her memories, and made her forget her Legendborn allies, her friends, her ancestors, her boyfriend, Nick, even her own past as the descendent of Arthur Pendragon. Bree starts working with Zoe on the magical black market while secretly trying to undermine Erebus, who they suspect is draining power from innocent Roofcrafting girls. But Bree gets trapped in a shady auction event and people from her past start cropping up. Thing gets messy very quickly.

Deonn’s writing is excellent. As always, the plot is dense and full of complicated lore and magic systems. Deonn goes all out with the love triangle between Nick, Bree and their demonic partner Selwyn.

For the first time in the series, we get to see the world through people other than Bree. I was overjoyed to read chapters from the perspective of William, the Scion of Gawain, and one of my absolute favourite characters.

Deonn leaves the story on another cliffhanger and doesn’t tie up all the ends from the previous two books, but the agonising tension from Bree, Sel and Nick’s interactions are so good that I didn’t mind.

This series keeps getting better and better.
