For any fans of Six of Crows, The Gilded Wolves or Caraval, Kate J Armstrong has delivered a story that is perfect for fantasy readers.

Set in the hedonistic city of Simta in the Eudean Republic, the plot follows the ‘Nightbirds’; girls with the unique ability to grant magical kisses. But magic is both feared and revered in Simta, and our three main characters, Matilde, Æsa and Sayer, are soon caught up in a dangerous tangle of political and religious intrigue.

The setting is the highlight of the book. This city is filled with vibrant descriptions, lush imagery, and unique moments of magic, like silk flowers that bloom on command and opulent cocktails that change taste as you drink them. The author has invented words and small details to make Simta feel both familiar, historical and fantastical, and it’s a lot of fun to read.

The book is similar to other YA stories. The magic system feels a little derivative, as it incorporates the tried-and-tested four elements of earth, air, fire and water. Six of Crows fans will notice a lot of familiar character and story beats, such as the villainisation of magical powers by a fictional religious body. I had a continuous feeling of ‘I’ve seen this before’ while reading. But persevere and look out for Armstrong’s original additions. The Nightbirds themselves are a great concept, with Matilde, Sayer and Æsa all compelling leads with fleshed-out story arcs. The author makes up for her same-same narrative with stunning characterisation.

Although Nightbirds does not break any new ground, it’s an engaging read with plenty of twists to keep you guessing.
