On 9 April,1918, a little baby was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. His name was Jørn Utzon. As a little boy he built cubbyhouses from sheets and blankets and even made sailboats out of his orange peels at breakfast. As Jørn grew bigger, so did his ideas. He thought about floating buildings, climbing courtyards, overhanging roofs on houses which helped to keep them cool. All inspired by his orange peels at breakfast.
Then one day when Jørn was a little older he had a new magnificent idea. He entered his idea for a design of a building into a competition and he won. Some people didn’t like this design but others thought it a masterpiece. Some said it was silly, others said it was ugly. But architects said it was truly magnificent.
Next time you visit Sydney check out his incredible story. You can visit this magnificent building, the Sydney Opera House, and remember a young boy’s dream that became one of the most wonderous buildings in the whole wide world.
