Mr Hindbottom lives alone, and he prefers it that way. He enjoys a few small routines – waving his cane as he chats at the shops, blowing his nose loudly when others speak, and, most of all, returning home.

But there are things he avoids: looking at old photographs and sleeping in a bed that feels far too big for one person.

One day a travelling salesman knocks on his door. To his left lies a dog. Mr Hindbottom shoos him away, telling him to take his dog with him before slamming the door. The only problem is, the dog doesn’t belong to the salesman. And the dog doesn’t leave. Instead, it curls up on Mr Hindbottom’s doormat and falls asleep.

Wherever Mr Hindbottom goes, the dog remains nearby. When he checks the mailbox, the dog is in the yard. When he mows the lawn, the dog watches. When he goes to the shops, the dog is still there when he returns.

One evening a scrap of food flies out the window. The dog eats it. The next night another piece appears, and then another.

As the weather grows colder, a blanket follows.

Soon the front door is left open and the dog warms itself by the fire.

The dog teaches Mr Hindbottom the joy of treats and that dawn is better for walking than sleeping. In return, Mr Hindbottom teaches the dog who to chase from the door, what sunsets are for, and the pleasure of travelling with the wind in your fur.

Gradually, sunshine fills Mr Hindbottom’s home, and even people begin to visit.

This gentle book shows how a dog can transform a lonely life, bringing warmth, new found joy, companionship and light into a quiet home. As the seasons pass, there is a sadness as Mr Hindbottom slows with age and his time draws near. Yet the story also holds hope: another chapter lies ahead for the faithful dog. It is the circle of life.

Beautifully illustrated, the book tugs firmly at the heartstrings. Anyone who has known the love of an animal will likely feel a tear welling in their eye.
