Towards the end of Data informed learners, author Dr Selina Fisk shares that writing is an ongoing cycle. On finishing a piece of writing, one returns to the beginning and starts again on the next piece. This holistic and continual idea contrasts with conceiving writing as a race or competition. And so we can use this recognisable, real-world example to imagine how student measurement, data, and analytics could potentially be used in teaching and learning.
On the one hand, student data – for example, standardised testing – is the subject of critique, debate, and discussion related to the negative impact of comparison and competition between students and schools. On the other hand, when used strategically within local school and classroom contexts, data can unlock a whole universe of possibilities. In our open-ended writing success example, students are guided by their teacher to identify themselves progressing within a process and as part of a whole class.
A sticky note with the student’s name provides evidence of where the student is within that process; planning, drafting, revising, editing, or publishing.
Data-informed learners is built on teachers (and students) creating, sharing, and tracking evidence of the learning process and, in turn, various tangible impacts of student actions – for example, a well-crafted and much-improved piece of writing. The book provides dozens of more creative, complex, and practical data-informed classroom examples, with illustrations.
Dr Fisk reminds us that, as teachers, we aim to do everything we can to positively impact the students in our care. With consideration, negotiation, and planning within a supportive classroom context, the strategic use of student data is valuable, especially when the students themselves are engaged and involved in the conversation.
