You most likely know little
There’s little that’s known
They’re so hard to study
They’re tiny when grown

Wasps are such important little creatures. They are pollinators like bees and are essential to life on Earth. This latest book from the CSIRO publishing stable is here to inform us just how important wasps are, and show us the range of different Australian wasps that we have. They are not cute and cuddly like some of our popular wildlife, but you might be surprised at the number of varieties we have, and just how attractive they can be.

There is the blue flower wasp and the orchid dupe wasp that have pretty blue wings. The cicada-killer wasp, who looks very attractive, regardless of its name. Did you know that wasp bodies can shimmer? And that there are some that are shiny and green and peacock blue too! Every wasp needs a home. Some make mud nests, or paper-like nests, others make a home in fruit. Some even lay eggs in a spider, that’s gross, but true!

This is a great picture book to help kids learn about these often maligned insects. You realise just how beautiful they are but still, let’s not touch them as some of them sting.
