The Lucky Shack spends his days from his foundations on the shores watching the boats bob gently, the clouds swish by, the sea sparkling. He is cared for and tended by the man who lives within him. The man dusts his edges and polishes his windows. He is a fisherman who loves the shack, and the shack loves him in return.

One day the weather becomes very wild. The waves on the sea are wild, smashing and crashing. The wind howls and rain thrashes against Shack’s shutters. The Lucky Shack is alone. By autumn his paint is peeling and his roof begins to sag.

Then one day, in early spring, a bud blooms from the shack’s eaves, and sunlight pushes through. At night Shack finds the courage to let the moon shine in.

The next day something special happens. A young fisherwoman has arrived and is starting to put Shack back together again. She lovingly straightens his sleepy roof, filling each crack in the walls with care. Each weeks she returns with treasures for his rooms, boxes of books to line the walls and lights the fire to fill Shack with warmth and love. One day she brings the best thing of all. Little boots on his floor. A Lucky Shack indeed.

The Lucky Shack is a story of life. Cycling through the seasons as change is felt in the weather and in life. Jennifer Falkner’s fabulous illustrations bring this story off the page and into our imagination. Thoughtfully and skilfully done.
