Wake up! It’s Saturday, jump put of bed!
Brush teeth! Get dressed! Make sure Rufus is fed.
As the family rises on the first day of the weekend there is no time to waste. There’s breakfast to make, look at the time! Grab your goggles for the pool to practise your kicks. A shower and get dressed. ‘We’re off to the shops – our pantry is bare!’ As their tummy’s start rumbling, they all head back home to make something yummy. Head to the library and return the overdue books. Of course they have to check out more. ‘Blip their barcodes as we skip out the door.’
There’s time in the park, a visit to the butcher. Time for more fun at home before dinner. ‘Bath, teeth. Pyjamas. A quick book to read.’
Saturday’s such a busy day but Sunday is just for fun. And so, the next day begins. Running through the sprinklers, making forts in the loungeroom.
Danny Snell’s illustrations complement this story perfectly. They are warm and joyful and funny. The more you look at them the more you discover as you see the minutia of their life, including Rufus who’s always in on the action.
The story is told in rhyme and smoothly rolls off the tongue as you read aloud. It’s a well-told story of a family’s weekend, one shared by millions. But it’s the happy busyness of their weekend life and the simplicity of the pleasures they enjoy, the ones that every child should have time to do, which makes this book special.
