This book is a brilliant, heart-wrenching novel that demonstrates the problems and difficulties faced by young women in our society today.

The Gaps is about two girls, Natalia and Chloe, who are trying to find their lost friend, Yin. Together, both girls, who are completely different, embark on a fragile journey, trying to understand Yin’s circumstances as well as trying to raise awareness about race and privilege through multiple situations.

The development of Natalia’s character is marvellous. I despised her, loved her and never knew what she would do next. I felt how deeply struck Chloe is by Yin’s terrible disappearance. I shed tears, felt fear and realisation as Chloe and Natalia desperately craves reassurance that their classmate, Yin, is safe after her sudden disappearance.

This is the first psychological thriller I have read and I was not disappointed. Leanne Hall’s writing is engaging. When I did put this book down a few times, I found myself picking it up the next second as the story was so compelling. It is also a significant educator as Hall’s story covers racial diversity, different genders and personalities.

I highly recommend The Gaps, to both girls and to boys, to help us all gain an understanding of the problems we face as a society. It was a complete eye opener and a captivating read. I loved this book. I would recommend it to mature readers.
