This story starts way back in 1890. Sydney was a much smaller town then with lots of little houses either side of the harbour. To visit friends or go shopping from one side of the harbour to the other, the residents could go only by ferry. But three years later an idea was born. Maybe a bridge across the harbour could be possible.

But sometimes, as this book shows us, when a great idea is born, it takes many years for it to become a reality. There was much talking and arguing among those responsible for the plans, a terrible war that went on for years and then a serious lack of money. But finally, over 30 years later, work started on what would become a world icon.

Very few words are written on each page but the detailed illustrations of workmen with their hammers, picks and shovels, posters advertising Arnold’s biscuits, shops selling Koala Tea and Mrs McGee’s Farm Fresh Eggs take us back to those times. And finally, when the two arches did come together, we see thousands of people meeting to celebrate.

This story is simply told for the young children to appreciate what an exciting time it was. And to show that big dreams can come true even though it may take a lot of courage to keep going despite all the challenges. It’s an incredible moment in our history.
