The decline in global mental health has been well documented, with the pandemic only making things worse. Perhaps the only upside to this has been the removal of the stigma surrounding mental health and the increasing willingness of the population to talk about it.

Miller successfully taps into this with a book deconstructing the search for psychological help. Miller is a counsellor, having navigated mental health issues herself and discovering the need to help others. She has produced a marvellous mix of science, anecdote and quotes from respected professional sources in a form that makes it easily understandable. At each stage of the book is an interactive analogue scale allowing the reader to check in with their own mental health as measured by self-esteem. All Miller requires of the reader is honesty.

She makes a distinction between counsellors, such as herself, psychologists and psychiatrists, giving case histories applicable to seeking each type of therapist. Early chapters take the reader through definitions, the pitfalls of relying on internet searches for answers, and the types of therapies available. Middle chapters take the reader into different scenarios, such as dealing with grief, anxiety, addictions, depression, etc. The later chapters detail action steps to be taken. Blank spaces are plentiful, allowing the reader to note their responses to specific prompts.

Miller even allows the reader to seek a short cut, with the book distilled into a list of 10 takeaways, titled, ‘If you only read one chapter …’ Her writing is approachable, and her humour defuses difficult issues.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Tammi Miller, authorI’m a Certified Practising Counsellor (she/her), registered with the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia.

As the founder of BARE Therapy, my aim is to provide you with practical, behind-the-scenes counselling to improve your mental well-being. I’m passionate about improving health literacy for all, and look forward to helping facilitate a happier, healthier, more mindful you.

As part of my commitment to being the best therapist I can be, I attend regular group and peer supervision, and engage in continuing professional development, studying to ensure best practise.

I like working with all types of clients, though have a special interest in helping people to manage issues around anxiety, stress, depression, addiction and fostering positive interpersonal relationships.

My book, Paperback Therapy, came out in March 2024. It is designed as a resource to help those who can’t yet prioritise the funds or time to see their own therapist to access the tips and tools we use with clients in the room.

I enjoy speaking on topics of mental health and creative arts therapy in panels and as keynote for events such as writer’s festivals, corporate seminars, and more.

Outside of my counselling practise, I enjoy spending my time getting lost in a good thriller, going for park walks with friends, catching a live basketball game, or spending time being present with my rescue cat.
