To finish off a mega year, here is a mega book of mega beasts!
The first two mega pages introduce us to famous dinosaur fossils. It is so exciting, as some of the discoveries of the most famous fossils are right here in Australia. Imagine, we have the earliest forms of life, still evident to this day, at Shark Bay in Western Australia.
As we turn the pages we are invited to walk with these Triassic and Jurassic giants, sharing their life with other creatures of the time; giant insects and centipedes, reptiles and amphibians. We then head down to Antarctica, still attached to Australia at the time, and there we find Cryolophosaurus, feathered polar theropod raptors, hunting herds of Glacialisaurus living in the polar forest and tundra.
One of my favourite and scariest pages features a herd of timid muttaburrasaurus’ marching up a dried riverbed. Each is a seven-metre, five-tonne, duck-billed hadrosaur, trumpeting their alarm as they are ambushed by a herd of turkey-sized feathered raptors, Dromaeosaurus’.
There is so much to this book which this reviewer cannot do justice to in the space provided. But needless to say, every page of this incredible book will transport you back in time to meet the local dinosaurs, great and small.
