Freycinet Barnes has a handsome husband, three children and her days are filled with running a busy household. But she feels unseen, unappreciated, old and stuck on a busy, yet empty treadmill.
When she is accidentally hit by a car and then discovers her husband in an embrace with a younger woman, Frey’s world is turned upside down. But when she stumbles across the West Moonah Women’s Choir, a remarkable group of seven women who welcome her into their vibrant world, she discovers friendship, laughter – and an undercurrent of fury that matches her simmering rage. The women have varied backgrounds but one thing in common: they want to smash the patriarchy.
The joy and power of music help Frey and her fellow choir members face personal battles and unite together in a greater cause, where they will harness their anger to take on the system – which could have repercussions for them all. But some things deserve to be demolished.
This feel-good novel is funny rather than didactic. There is heartbreak and injustice but also kindness and compassion. I laughed and cried reading this book and finished it with a smile on my face.
