Garth Nix is the author of the bestselling ‘Old Kingdom Series’ and The Left-handed Booksellers of London. This new book is his first foray into adult fiction. It brings together eight short stories featuring Sir Hereward and Mister Fitz, plus adds one brand new one, to make one action-packed collection.

Sir Hereward is the child of a secret society of witches who are charged with protecting the world from extra-dimensional entities, also known as godlets. With his sorcerous puppet, Mister Fitz, they must track down all forbidden godlets and destroy them. Full of magical weapons, pirates, dragons and other mythical creatures, the adventures of these two characters are punctuated with danger, devilry, and betrayal.

From the opening pages of Sir Hereward and Mister Fitz, I was drawn in by the detailed map of the lands in which Sir Hereward and Mister Fitz journey. I love it when a fantasy world is laid out visually for me. I am intrigued by the origins of these two characters. Both are outsiders and do not fit in with others of their kind, but they seem to work so well together. They have an easy and familiar way with each other and the banter between them often made me chuckle. My favourite stories in this volume are the pirate adventure, ‘Beyond the Sea Gate of the Scholar-Pirates of Sarsköe’ and the slightly creepy ‘Home Is the Haunter’.

This collection is a must read for Garth Nix fans. I have my fingers crossed there will be more tales of the knight Sir Hereward and the sorcerer Mister Fitz to come.
