Brynn has spent most of her life among the people of Alaha – a community that has been exiled at sea – where she is finishing her training as a guard.
Brynn is eager, as are all the other young guards, to attend Kenta’s annual market, hosted by the very same people who exiled the Alaha people.
While at the market she is tricked when someone places an object in her pocket and she’s accused of stealing, which leads to the breaking of a century-long peace treaty.
Acker is the soldier who slid the object into her pocket. He has sworn under a blood oath from Kenta to reveal to Brynn her true identity. Brynn learns that not everything is what it seems. The future has never looked so unsure, from rumours of growing rebellion to her growing feelings for the soldier.
I enjoyed learning about the world’s magic operates, with the ‘Heirs’ who are chosen from the gods to wield different abilities. Brynn’s ability being light wielding and Acker being able to manipulate metal.
At the start, I felt overloaded as so much happens. In the first few pages, the breaking-of-treaty-scene was such an important event that it could have been more drawn out. At times, Brynn and Acker felt less enemies-to-lovers and more endless angry sparring. However, I loved their relationship, especially their slow-burn romance.
I enjoyed Metal Slinger; it is fast paced, small chapters, great banter and a slow burn. Great for well-attuned fantasy readers who loved Fourth Wing, Heavenly Bodies and The Serpent and the Wings of Night.
