There are books that ideally capture the feeling of love, romance, and finding yourself again after loss and heartbreak. Then there is Crushing, a book that transcends those that have come before in a way that reflects these themes so masterfully as it sharply observes thoughts, feelings and emotions that come from love, loss and heartbreak.
Our story follows Marnie, who is done with relationships and twisting herself into the ideal girlfriend. That is until she meets Isaac, someone who truly understands her. The problem is that Marnie and Isaac are just friends, and he’s got someone else. Marnie has to work out who she is, what she wants and how to start over again in the face of heartbreak. She is a hot mess. Sure, she does and says things that will make you shake your head. But her character feels real, vivid and honest.
This book is a smart, funny and witty observation on contemporary life, love, relationships and what it means to start over again after losing everything that was once familiar to you. It’s fresh, elegant and deeply moving. With a strong dose of honesty and vulnerability, Novak has created a beautiful contemplation on what happens when you lose yourself in love, and the journey of self-discovery out of it.
Ultimately, where the book shines is the writing. There’s a simplicity to it, but also a charm in the prose, character voices and observations. It truly tugs at your heartstrings. As a reader, you’ll not only feel seen, but you’ll be moved.
