Scriptwriting duo Silas and Rose finally get the break they need when a script of theirs is accepted, as long as they are willing to do an extensive rewrite. Once completed, they will get paid. They are almost broke, so on that promise they decide to give up their New York apartment and move back to Silas’s childhood home to do the necessary rewrites. With their beloved fur baby, Goober, they pack up the car, hopeful the country setting will give them the peace they need to complete the script and a brighter future.
This is not an easy decision as Silas had a very dysfunctional childhood. Both his mother and her sister, Bunny, are alcoholics, Bunny being the worst of the two. As a child, Silas was often left in her care to help out his mother, Lou Lou. During their stay, Silas intends to keep as far away as possible from Bunny.
Once they arrive, Silas is told that Bunny is living in the main house now. Silas is shocked when he finally sees her. Bunny is not well, having deteriorated both physically and mentally. Unfortunately, for Silas, Rose and Goober, things soon spiral out of control.
This book is well written, with echoes of Stephen King. I love the characters of Silas and Rose and little Goober, with his awesome personality. I wanted only the best for them.
Bunny is a book that has stayed with me long after the last page was turned. Its dark themes may not be for everyone as things do get gruesome at times, but if you are okay with that, this book will not disappoint. S E Tolsen is actually writing duo Emma Olsen and Vere Tindale. A very strong debut.
