The Priory of the Orange Tree is one of the most iconic fantasy stories of the last decade. Does Samantha Shannon’s new prequel live up to the first book? Absolutely!

A Day of Fallen Night is set 500 years before Priory and covers the first rise of the draconic being, Fýredel, and the legendary battle that followed, known as the Grief of Ages. The story returns to the vast kingdoms of Inys, Laisa and Seiki, and historical figures that were briefly mentioned in Priory, such as Queen Glorian Shieldheart, Wulfert Glenn and Princess Dumai, are fleshed out into incredible new leads.

The most impressive element of A Day of Fallen Night is its broad representation of female characters, as the book features many women at all stages of life: pubescent, pregnant, middle-age, and menopausal. This choice feels unique, and a rarity considering high fantasy’s typical focus on young women and princesses as leads. Just like its predecessor, A Day of Fallen Night is dominated by serious discussions of female sexuality, reproductive freedom, and the emotional strain of pregnancy, but Shannon’s language is accepting and recognises many different perspectives.

Despite its considerable length and predetermined ending, the story never feels boring. Like every good prequel, Shannon expands on her world by taking us to new and familiar locations. Apart from a few conspicuous set-ups for Priory, the author’s engaging writing and attention to detail creates a fabulous narrative that is able to stand on its own. This book spoke to me on a deeply personal level. Like riding on dragon’s back, it is a thrilling adventure. An absolute must for fantasy fans and avid readers.
