Onxy Storm, the much anticipated third novel in Rebecca Yarros’ ‘Empyrean’ series was released on 21 January.
Desperate for answers, fans have been quick to get their hands on Onyx Storm, the latest instalment in the ‘Empyrean’ series.
An enemies-to-lovers romantasy, Yarros’ series took the world by storm with her first novel in the series, Fourth Wing. Published in 2023 the novel is packed with action, romance, steamy scenes and dragons.
The story introduces readers to 20-year-old Violet Sorrengail, a studious and bright young woman who aspires to join the Scribe Quadrant and pursue a life surrounded by books and knowledge. But when her mother, a commanding general, orders her to join the Riders Quadrant instead, she obliges.
When Violet enters the perilous world of Basgiath War College in Navarre, we follow her and other cadets as they train and attempt to become elite dragon riders. Despite initial misgivings, Violet begins to thrive at the college and bonds with not one, but two dragons, channelling the power to wield lightening and in turn, establishing herself as a fierce and worthy adversary.
Over the course of the series Violet makes friends, rivals and even strikes up an all-consuming relationship with fellow rider, Xaden Riorson, the shadow-wielding son of her mother’s enemy. Her bond with Xaden is further amplified by the fact that their dragon’s are mated.
Yarros creates a world rich in detail, characters and intricate plots twists.
Like Violet, we discover that much of what she’s been told about the kingdom of Navarre has been a lie: the Poromiel are not in fact the enemy. Instead, venin, who have long been written as the stuff of myths, exist and are currently waging a devastating war. And in Iron Flame this truth culminates in a devastating battle, leaving readers on a giant cliff hanger – to save Violet and the ward, Xaden wields power from the ground and in turn becomes venin – the very evil they are fighting against.
It’s no wonder then that fans have been eager to dive into this latest book.
Yarros picks up right where Irone Flame ended. In Onyx Storm Violet is on a mission to find a cure for Xaden, and so we follow her as she travel’s outside of Navarre’s failing wards. Along the way we learn more about Violet’s allusive second signet and Andarna’s rare breed of dragon (which may just hold the key to everything).
As the battle against the venin intensifies, we join Violet across new cities, people and truths.
