Riverside Theatres is premiering Felicity Castagna’s novel, Girls in Boys’ Cars.

The novel is a fun and fabulous story about Asheeka and Rosa, two funny, sharp, and adventurous young women who embark on a Thelma and Louise-esque road trip in our backyard, Western Australia.

The novel received The Victorian and Queensland Premier’s Literary Award for YA and the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards Prize for Writing for Young Adults 2022. It was also shortlisted for the 2022 Children’s Book of the Year Award: Older Readers.

In a statement to the CBCA, Castagna said, ‘There is such a long tradition of male road stories – think Jack Kerouac’s On The Road (which I loved as a teenager!) but there are so few stories about women and girls. Boys on the road are looking for adventure, women always seem to be running away and driving themselves over cliffs like Thelma and Louise. I wanted to write something where girls get to be the agents of their own kind of road story even if it’s complicated and everyone else is always getting in the way.’

This stage adaptation will run from 19 October – 3 November and is directed and adapted by Priscilla Jackman.

Ziggy Resnick (Griffin Theatre Company’s A is for Apple) and Nikita Waldron (Winner of the Australian Theatre for Young People 2021 Rebel Wilson Comedy Commission) play Asheeka and Rosa.
