If you remember Claire Saxby’s beautiful book, ‘Koala’, which we reviewed last year and which has been short-listed for the 2017 Children’s Book Council Awards, then you won’t want to miss her latest book, Dingo. This magnificent creature with her beautiful tawny eyes is the star of this book. She lives in the rocky mountains where the old gnarled eucalyptus grow. We can see her hiding between the rocks waiting for the sun to go down so as she can start hunting for her hungry babies. With her excellent night sight and sense of smell, she catches her prey and takes it back to the den.
This is such a simple story and so perfectly told for the littlies. And Tannya Harricks’ wonderfully bold illustrations are absolutely mesmerising. Painted in oils they bring a strength and beauty to the animals and the Australian landscape.
As well as the simple story, the author has given us just a little information to add to our understanding of these incredibly intelligent animals.
