The Glass Girl is a deeply evocative novel that will resonate with YA readers beyond the primary theme of addiction.

Bella’s world has been turned upside down. Her grandmother has died, and Bella feels that she was the only person who fully understood her. Through this battle of grief, Bella turns to alcohol. She experiences a break-up, has troubles with her parent’s separation, witnesses the true sides of her school friends, and ends up in rehab. She is forced to face her alcoholism and the people she has hurt along the way.

Glasgow’s authenticity and empathy in her writing pulled me in, capturing both the heartbreak and resilience in Bella’s journey. While some plot points, such as the break-up, may feel clichéd, her honest portrayal of teenage struggles stood out. Though certain subplots remained unresolved, the novel’s message on self-acceptance and perseverance shines through. Both the pain and hope in Bella’s journey reminded me that recovery is not a linear process.

The Glass Girl is a good read, reminding us about acceptance, as well as standing up for yourself. But be warned, it features heavy topics.
