As we turn to the first page of this book we see ‘A whiskered snout at the mouth of a wombat burrow, but it is not a wombat. It is a Tasmanian Devil in a borrowed den.’

You see, Tasmanian Devils would rather use other little animals’ burrows for shelter and safety, rather than build their own. But if they want a nesting den for babies then they will build a deeper and more secure den. Not that their little babies take up too much room, for each little imp or pup is smaller than your little fingernail when it is born!

In this story our mother has two very hungry babies that need to be fed. They’re lucky as they can spend the first four months in their mum’s pouch drinking milk from her teats. But once they have grown too big they’ll be out hunting with their mum for little mammals, birds and even insects.

Every page we turn is so beautifully illustrated with each background showing the lush Tasmanian countryside where these little creatures, which are now considered endangered, have made their homes.

This book is a thing of beauty. The children will fall in love and hopefully become aware of the importance of protecting our Australian fauna.
