This is an intriguing page-turner with a rich storyline. Strike the Zither follows Zephyr, the strategist. to an honourable Lordess in the Xin Empire. She is fighting two other warlords who are trying to claim the land for themselves. When Zephyr finds herself in a situation she can utilise to aid her in defeating her enemies, she embarks on a path of lies and betrayal, going undercover to try and gain an advantage through alliances.
The world Joan has created is very immersive and visual, which made it easy for me to picture in my mind the scenes and follow the story. Zephyr, as a character, has a lot of depth. But all the characters were well written. There wasn’t a clear good and bad side, as people betray each other. Even those clearly labelled as evil have some deeply hidden, yet positive, emotions. There was also a big plot twist and cliff-hanger at the end which kept me on the edge of my seat.
This book was unlike any other that I’ve read. Although some parts of Strike the Zither were slightly confusing at times, it was a great novel overall and really got me thinking. It has action, mystery and also includes a beautiful map and art of a few of the most prominent characters in the front of the book, further enhancing my enjoyment. I now need the next book in the series.
