If Not Us is a fantastic narrative with a likeable protagonist and an urgent call to action on climate change that will inspire and empower readers of all ages.
Hesse lives in a little seaside town where a coal mine and power station are part of the landscape, as well as part of the ever-growing problem of climate change. Hesse’s mother is a member of a local environmental group that is working to close the mining and power plant. However, Hesse is more interested in surfing and in Fenna, the new exchange student from the Netherlands. He doesn’t quite understand the urgency of his mother’s mission.
If Not Us is a coming-of-age story which looks at growing up in the modern world while facing the looming climate problem, and resolving to take action.
This book truly exposes the problem at hand, as well as addressing what it means for people and the environment. But, the book is also a lot of fun to read, with heartfelt romance, high drama, and some fantastic surfing descriptions that made me feel like I was right there.
