Photographic non-fiction books don’t seem very common now, so, this series from Aussie Ark is very welcome. With four books in the series so far – George Wombat (book 1), Elvis Crocodile (book 2), Elsa Koala (book 3), and Kraken the Komodo Dragon (book 4) – we meet animals that have been rescued and are now living in The Australian Reptile Park.
Each book helps educate us about the animal. Their stories include how they are cared for, what they eat, and how they are kept stimulated every day. Some are released into the wild again after they have grown up or have recovered from injuries, like George the wombat, who was orphaned as a joey. Others are still residing in luxury at the Park. There are terrific facts in the back of the book, with a QR code that links to video footage of the animal.
Two of the books, Kracken and Elvis, might be better for a slightly higher age group as what they like to eat does include humans. Also, there are some images that may be confronting for the very young, as fresh meat is provided for their meals.
This is a good series that provides a wealth of information showcasing such important work, packed into only 32 pages. Part of the proceeds from the books goes to supporting Aussie Ark, so that’s another great bonus.
