The authors of Plantology have over 60 years professional experience between them with plants, from horticulture to landscaping. From this experience they have created this encyclopaedic-like book to help us create better and more successful gardens.
Part 1: Plant Profiles is the biggest section of the book. These pages are packed with a broad range of ornamental plants (both native and exotic) they have selected from trees to shrubs, groundcovers, perennials and strappy leafed plants, all ‘proven performers’. They share why they like each plant and where to plant or how to use them. Each has photographs with helpful ideas of plant pairings, its best setting (suited to indoors, bee attracting, great for a country garden etc), specifications, tolerances, cultivation and so forth.
Part 2 is the Plant Thesaurus. This section is made up of lists to help you choose plants that fit different scenarios. Lists include small Australian native shrubs, plants for shady gardens, plants with decorative bark, berries, seed heads or that are wind tolerant. Plants with red, purple, or yellow flowers and onwards. Plants that attract beneficial insects, are great for rooftop pots or for scents in the different seasons. There are many more.
This excellent book has over 600 pages and is brimming with the authors’ knowledge. It is not just for professionals but for the general gardener too. Those creating or remaking gardens, from large gardens to small, will find it invaluable, helping us to plant thoughtfully and get the most pleasure from our gardens.
This book now lives on my coffee table. I love looking through it and feeling inspired.
