If you’re a millennial like myself and you’ve wondered why the hell school never taught us how taxes work, how to write a resume, or how to even begin to think about budgeting, How to Adult will save your life.

‘Adulting’ is a meme centred around millennials self-deprecatingly talking about their inability to do everyday tasks. You might have heard someone say, ‘Ugh, I can’t just adult today!’ for example. The joke is a bit tired by this point, but thankfully Anna Blackie’s book doesn’t ride the joke too far aside from the title. Instead, it’s full of genuinely helpful and easy-to-follow advice about how to tackle all the things that come with being an adult. From tax returns to mending a hole in your jeans to, of course, cooking smashed avocado perfectly every time, the book covers a lot of ground in an entertaining and informative way.

While the book covers basics like how to cook meat properly, or the right way to make your bed, it also tackles heavier stuff like how to ask your boss for a raise, or how to get everything in order before getting married. It’s all here, delivered in chapters like ‘Pretending You’re Not a Lazy Shit’. The course language might wear thin for some readers, but if you can get past that, it’s genuinely full of helpful advice that could prove useful for anyone in their 20ss.

It’s the kind of book perfect for your housemate who never learnt how to clean or do laundry properly, and constantly orders UberEats and then complains about being broke. Nothing beats a passive-aggressive gift!
