A tooth fairy is not much bigger than your thumbnail. They only have two teeth themselves and never, ever lose them. They have wings for flying, a pocket to keep shrunken coins in and a bag of fairy dust of course. They need to be super quiet, shhh, so they wear stylish socks and all-day comfy pyjamas.

All those teeth they collect are put to good use. Some larger teeth get turned into houses, schools and shops but most teeth are used as an important ingredient in the magical substance, fairy dust. Teeth that have cavities have lost a lot of their magic so are used in roads, walks and to plant gardens in.

There’s a lot to learn in this book. We discover what the tooth fairies can do with their magical abilities; sometimes turning each other into toadstools for fun.

There are very good sections on what to do if your tooth falls down the loo before the fairy collects it, or if maybe you just want to keep it yourself. We find out why they leave you a coin and even answer the perplexing question of how they know you have a tooth ready for collection.

What a lovely book this is. It’s full of joyful imaginings of these elusive fairies. It will make you giggle in parts. I read it with a smile on my face as I enjoyed the bright and clear illustrations that fill the pages from corner to corner. Perfect for those with a wobbly tooth or two.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Briony Stewart, author and illustratorBriony loves telling stories in lots of different ways. When she is not working on books you’ll most likely find her programming art activities and events, speaking at festivals and libraries across Australia, or doing something weird, like planting paper gardens, building life-sized dragons, or marshalling your local egg-rolling championships.

Briony claims to have ‘about a bazillion art influences’ – from the scientific drawings and discoveries of Gould and Haekle, to the mad, rambling drawings of Lear and Blake. She loves Victorian era science, whimsy and illustration, Japanese animation and print making, folktales, poetry, and ABC children’s programs pretty much all the way from the early 90’s to the present and above all else, is incredibly passionate about Australian children’s literature.

Briony currently resides in Fremantle, Western Australia writes and illustrates alongside two delightful children, a highly-strung dog and a plant-mad biologist husband.
