Berani is a powerful novel written by Michelle Kadarusman. This novel tells a story from three separate perspectives and how each of the characters’ lives become intertwined by taking action to protect the Orangutans. Due to the production of palm oil, the homes of many orangutans are being destroyed. This book sends a powerful message to its readers about the ability of two young children to make significant changes in the world.

The three perspectives that are shown in the book are Malia, Ari and Ginger Juice. Malia is a schoolgirl who stands up for what she believes in, no matter what the repercussions are. Her passion for saving the Orangutans is undeniable. Ari is a young boy who comes from a modest background, unlike Malia. Ari works in his uncle’s restaurant, which is well renowned for Ginger Juice, an Orangutan who has lived in a cage for many years. Ginger Juice is one of the many Orangutans who have had their homes destroyed for the production of palm oil.

When Ari and Malia’s paths cross, Ari is forced to disclose his concerns about the living conditions of his uncle’s pet Orangutan, Ginger Juice. This forms the foundation of the novel, which delves into the issue of the destruction of Orangutans’ homes. When reading this book, I loved how the author wrote in the voice of these three separate characters. This made it clear what each character’s thought process was throughout the book.

I could not put this book down because of how well Michelle Kadarusman wrote it, so I always wanted to know what would happen next. I believe that readers will not be disappointed with the ending of this amazing story. I highly recommend this book to any kids who care about, or feel connections to, the environment.
