Filled with edge of your seat suspense, flawed yet enthralling characters and an atmospheric setting, The Bay is everything you want a psychological thriller to be.

Kenna joins her best friend Mikki at an isolated surfing spot called Sorrow Bay. Completely cut off from the rest of the world, Kenna soon meets the rest of Mikki’s friends, who all appear to be hiding something. It’s here that Kenna learns that not everyone might make it out of Sorrow Bay.

With this premise, Reynolds is able to focus on building terror and suspense through complex characters with fascinating dynamics, rather than focusing on one single mystery. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a mystery to uncover though, with the story twisting into an unpredictable thriller that will keep you guessing right until the very end.

The characters are certainly far from likeable, but this is what makes them all the more compelling. The fact that they all have secrets that they would do anything to hide is what kept me hooked. This was aided by their intense passion for surfing, which bordered on obsession. Reynolds uses these cutthroat characters to add layer of psychological terror to this thriller. The nerve-shredding thrills are further evoked by the wild and dangerous setting. Vivid descriptions of Sorrow Bay are eerie. Isolated and trapped, it adds a menacing tone. Despite its slow pacing it does ramp up to heart stopping tension with plenty o ftwists and turns. It’s the kind of exhilarating thriller that will keep you up all night reading.
