The O’Shea sisters, never particularly close, have drifted even further apart since the devastating death of their only brother, Daniel, three years ago. Trapped in their grief, they are like planets operating in their own orbits.
Obstetrician Allison is the dutiful eldest, who is struggling with balancing a demanding job with family life. Glamorous Bridie is a film director with a heartthrob husband who fears her career has stalled. Nurse Clare’s wife has just left her, struggling to deal with Clare’s obsession for a baby, despite four miscarriages and a failed IVF journey. Youngest Emma uses God to fill the loneliness in her life.
On the third anniversary of Daniel’s death, Clare proposes that they trace the recipients of Daniel’s organs. The sisters all have different reactions, some positive, others negative. Daniel’s gift gave new life and hope to many others. Could it also help the sisters find each other again?
This is a sensitive, thought-provoking novel about family, connections, grief, hope and the messy complexity of life. Kylie Ladd offers astute insight into the O’Shea family dynamics and has woven a compelling story. An excellent read that lingered long after I finished.
