Fearless by Fiona Higgins

Book Review | Dec 2016

When six strangers meet up in Bali for a retreat to help them face their fears, little do they know what they will be confronting. The retreat is designed to help the participants overcome whatever frightens them so that they can fully enjoy life. The first part of Fearless explores the backstories of the participants. The phobias they experience are common to many of us. One is scared of flying, which made the journey from Australia very challenging. Another is terrified by snakes, which is not helpful for someone working in animal rescue in Bali. Another starts to panic at the prospect of public speaking – to the point that he passes out on stage. Relationships are built as fears are faced and they learn tactics to help them stare down whatever their nemesis is.

The second part of the book brings a surprise as things take an unexpected turn. Fiona Higgins has created characters with depth who we can engage and empathise with. Her knowledge of Indonesia is evident – she recently returned to Australia after living in Indonesia for three years – as is her understanding of fear, particularly the fear of flying, which she nailed.

At first I worried that this book was going to be a bit too fluffy. It seemed as if it was going to be predictable and lightweight. But it wasn’t long before I was hooked and found myself enjoying spending time with these quirky, likeable people. A great book for the holidays.
