The true crime writing President

Aug 2022

Former President Abraham Lincoln wrote a true crime story.

It’s common for presidents to turn their hand to written word after their reign, usually in the form of memoir. But how many Presidents have written true crime? Just one in fact – Abraham Lincoln.

Lincoln wrote a story in 1846 about a criminal case he undertook while working as a lawyer in 1841, prior to his time in office. Lincoln also allegedly took inspiration from Edgar Allan Poe. The story was published in his local newspaper, The Quincy Whig, and now lives on at the Smithsonian website.
