There’s only one known recording of the voice of J D Salinger, author of The Catcher in the Rye.
Unfortunately, it’s in possession of a woman who plans to cremate it alongside her when she dies. Betty Eppes is a former reporter who pretended to be a beautiful novelist with writer’s block and wrote Salinger a letter requesting to meet. The famously reclusive author agreed, and the pair met with Betty hiding a tape recorder to record the 27 minute conversation. Despite many requests over the years to purchase the recording, Betty refused out of guilt, saying, ‘I stole his voice.’
