James Joyce never visited Ireland again after he turned 30

Aug 2022

James Joyce was an Irish writer who was considered one of the most important authors of the 20th century.

He never returned to Ireland after the age of 30 despite frequently writing about his country of birth (Ulysses).

Joyce left Ireland in 1904, at age 22, and settled in Trieste, Italy. It appears, Joyce had a complicated relationship with his homeland, never getting Irish citizenship despite being eligible and not even returning to the country for his father’s funeral in 1931.
