Forgot to pack your holiday reading material? Check your hotel nightstand for some left-behind books. Hotel chain Travelodge, has released the top 20 most abandoned books at their locations across the UK.
Harry Potter appears three times on the list, which is topped by Margaret Atwood’s 1985 dystopian classic The Handmaid’s Tale followed by The Couple Next Door by Sharri Lapena and Bad Dad by David Walliams.
The trend, it seems, are books that have been turned into an award winning TV series or a box office movie, which are seeing vacationers returning to their paperback origins. Paula Hawkins’ The Girl on the Train has come in at No. 6, IT by Stephen King at No. 12 and Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies at No. 15.
In total, Travelodge reports that more than 70,000 books have been left behind in the chain’s 42,000 rooms across the UK. A substantial figure certainly, but one that likely pales in comparison to forgotten phone chargers.
