Sylvia Plath’s sequel plans

Feb 2023

According to Sylvia Plath’s mother, Aurelia Plath, her daughter had plans for a sequel to her novel, The Bell Jar.

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath is a semi-autobiographical novel that follows Esther Greenwood as she suffers a deep depression.

Sylvia shared with her mother in 1962 that she had plans for a sequel, stating ‘I’ve tried to picture my world and the people in it as seen through the distorting lens of a bell jar… My second book will show that same world as seen through the eyes of health.’

Unfortunately, this never came to fruition as Sylvia died by suicide a month after The Bell Jar was published.
