Instagram is the home of artful shots of avocado toast, acai bowls and gym selfies. And of course, aesthetically pleasing shots of open books arranged beside succulents and freshly poured coffee.
But if you’re looking for something with a little more substance. You can head over to the New York Public Library’s account (@nypl) now and read entire works of classic literature for free.
The library has launched its ‘Insta Novels’ initiative, in which works of classic literature are uploaded in full to its Instagram story.
The first Insta Novel, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is available to read now. Lewis Carrol’s famous adventure novel has been enhanced with psychedelic animations, illustrations and moving text.
The initiative was launched in the hopes of making classic literature more accessible.
Mother New York is the advertising agency that developed the Insta Novels. The agency said, ‘Instagram unknowingly created the perfect bookshelf for this new kind of online novel.’
Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s early feminist novella The Yellow Wallpaper is also slated for release. Which will be followed by Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. A library representative believes this to be an appropriate choice. Saying, ‘we are completely transforming the way people look at this popular social media platform, and reimagining the way people access the classics.’
The move has been described as an ‘ingenious way to try to get people reading’. The designers hope the stories will act as a ‘gateway drug’, which will convince users to continue reading the classics on other e-book and physical formats.
