Indigenous Literacy Day is almost here

Aug 2022

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) has announced that Indigenous Literacy Day (ILD) will be held on Wednesday 7 September. The theme is; Celebrating Stories, Languages and Cultures.

In collaboration with the Sydney Opera House, the ILF will hold two ILD events. Ambassadors Jessica Mauboy, Gregg Dreise, Justine Clarke, Josh Pyke and Co-Patron June Oscar AO will feature.

ILF Ambassador Jessica Mauboy says, ‘Stories have always been such an important part of my life. As a child growing up in Darwin, stories were told through music and song. Others in books or through works of art. These stories have shaped how I view the world and have hugely influenced my life as a songwriter and performer. I’m deeply passionate about supporting the work of the ILF. I am honoured to be a part of a special day that celebrates and shares how stories and languages are joyfully shared in song.’

A free ILD National Digital event will be held at 10:30am on 7 September. This 20-minute digital story will be available through the Opera House’s Digital Creative Learning program, which is free to libraries, schools, organisations and the general public. This story will be led by a group of children in remote Milikapiti, Jilkminggan and Northern Territory. ILF Ambassadors Jessica Mauboy and Gregg Dreise will also perform.

The second event held at the Opera House on 7 September is an invitation-only live performance event. Jessica Mauboy, Gregg Dreise, Justine Clarke, Josh Pyke and Co-Patron June Oscar OA will feature.
