Oct 2018

New Zealand author Sophie Siers’ children’s book is about a boy planning a wall in his bedroom, which is receiving global attention this month. Dear Donald Trump is the story of a Kiwi boy named Sam who is faced with terrible problem. He has to share a room with his brother.

Sam hears about Donald Trump’s idea to build a wall between the US and Mexico, which inspires him to build his very own wall, down the centre of his bedroom.

Author, Sophie Siers says that when Mr Trump campaigned on his Mexico wall policy. She became interested in what children thought about the idea.

“I started to think about those really important things in a child’s life. Where it’s difficult, and what matters to children. Sharing a room is one of the biggest.”

Dear Donald Trump is a series of Sam’s letters, and has just had its local unveiling where Siers read extracts:

“I’m writing to you from my bedroom in New Zealand. Sadly the room doesn’t belong only to me. Tonight on the TV news I saw you talking about building a wall. It made me think that maybe I need one too.”

Another of the letters reads:

“Dear Donald Trump,

At dinner tonight we had a discussion about the wall proposals, both yours and mine. I don’t know about you but I’m getting a lot of negative feedback.

My brother said that they’re both dumb ideas.

Mum said that if you were like other men she knew you would talk about it a lot but never build it.

Dad didn’t say anything.

Respectfully,

Sam”

A hardback version will be released in the UK on 1st November this year and the paperback will follow in March 2019.
