2024 Booker Prize shortlist announced

Sep 2024

The shortlist for the Booker Prize 2024 have been announced.

Founded in the UK in 1969, the Booker Prize initially rewarded Commonwealth writers and now spans the globe: it is open to anyone regardless of origin.

Each year, the prize is awarded to what is, in the opinion of our judges, the best sustained work of fiction written in English and published in the UK and Ireland. The winning book is a work that not only speaks to our current times, but also one that will endure and join the pantheon of great literature.

The winner and the shortlisted authors are guaranteed a global readership and a life-changing increase in book sales. The winner of the Booker Prize also receives £50,000, with £2,500 awarded to each of the other shortlisted authors. The prizes are supported by Crankstart.

The 2024 shortlist for the Booker Prize – the world’s most influential prize for a single work of fiction – was announced on 16 September 2024. The shortlist includes the largest number of women in the Booker’s 55-year history, with five women and one man represented. Authors from five countries appear on the list, including the first Dutch writer to be shortlisted, the first Australian in 10 years, as well as British, Canadian and American authors. Two of the authors have been shortlisted previously.

The winner will be announced on Tuesday, 12 November. The winner of the 2023 prize was Prophet Song by Paul Lynch
