Netflix have announced that Scott Westerfeld’s popular novel Uglies will receive a film adaptation.

Uglies by Scott WesterfeldUglies was first published in 2005 and is arguably the novel which popularised the Dystopian genre among younger readers. Novels such as The Hunger Games (2008), The Maze Runner (2009), and Divergent (2011) came out afterwards to much commercial success.

While the aforementioned beloved titles have all received film adaptations, until now Uglies hadn’t. On 29 September 2020, Netflix announced that a film adaption of the book had been greenlit. Netflix also announced Joey King will star in the film. Netflix tweeted ‘Joey King will star in and exec. produce McG’s new Netflix film UGLIES. An adaptation of Scott Westerfeld’s novel, the story is set in a dystopian world where every 16-year-old is subjected to an operation that conforms them to ideal beauty.’

Uglies by Scott Westerfeld has three sequels and three spinoff novels which are set in the same world. The first novel, Uglies follows teenager Tally Youngblood who upon turning 16 will be subjected to a surgery that will turn her from an ‘ugly’ to a ‘pretty’. However when she befriends Shay, a teenager who shares the same birthday as Tally, her world begins to unravel. When Shay runs away because she’s unsure she wants to become a ‘pretty’, Tally learns the dark truth about her society and begins to fight back.

According to Deadline, Chase Stokes (Outer Banks), Brianne Tju (I Know What You Did Last Summer), and Keith Powers (The Tomorrow War), are also joining the production.

Joey King who will star and also act as an executive producer on the film, shared with Deadline the importance and significance of working on the project. King stated, ‘It was very exciting for me. The Uglies books meant a lot to me as a kid… Being able to make that and be the lead of those movies and also have so much fun while doing it. What a dream realised! I was 11 years old when I fell in love with the books.’

A release date has yet to be confirmed for the film. But it’s expected to be released sometime this year, so stay tuned!
