The latest ‘Alice-Miranda’ book

Article | Issue: Nov 2023

The new ‘Alice-Miranda’ book is here! Good Reading for Kids caught up with the author Jacqueline Harvey to talk about Alice-Miranda’s Christmas adventure in Alice-Miranda and the Christmas Mystery.

Christmas is almost here, and Alice-Miranda and her closest friends are celebrating early at Highton Hall. But it’s not all gingerbread, parties and present shopping.

There are mysteries to be solved!

Why are Christmas decorations disappearing and local stores empty of festive treats?

What long-kept family secret does Alice-Miranda discover? More importantly, what will she do about it?

JACQUELINE-HARVEYWhere did you get the idea for your ‘Alice-Miranda’ series?

I wanted to write a school story because it was a setting I knew well. I was a teacher for a long time before I became a full time writer. Alice-Miranda was initially inspired by three girls I taught. As she developed, she grew to reflect the best bits of so many children (girls and boys) I’ve worked with over the years. I also love to travel so I was keen to send her on adventures around the world.

What can you tell us about the mystery in this story?

First up someone is stealing all of the Christmas decorations from the villages near Alice-Miranda’s home. Then there’s another mystery about a note Alice-Miranda finds in the spout of an antique teapot that she’s bought for Mrs Oliver’s Christmas present. She has to work out what it means and then decide what she’ll do with it, as the information will change the course of a number of people’s lives.

Alice-Miranda and her friends are celebrating Christmas at Highton Hall – how do you celebrate Christmas?

Over the years we’ve celebrated in many different ways. From family affairs with lots of relatives and friends, traditional Christmas food and a game of backyard cricket to travelling overseas to snowy locations with Christmas markets and sleigh rides. Christmas isn’t always the same for us and very much depends on where we are and who we’re with.

What are some of the most important lessons Alice-Miranda learns on her Christmas adventure?

That she can’t always fix everything on her own and that people will always surprise you.

Who is you favourite character and why?

That’s like asking a parent who their favourite child is. Hand on heart I don’t have a favourite character. I love them all.

Can you describe this book in three words?

Mysterious, festive, and fun!
