What are you reading now?

When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A Parker

Why did you choose this book?

I’ve been reading a bit of fantasy lately, but I was looking for something with stronger lore and darker themes. I wanted more genuine characters who don’t just fit the cookie-cutter mould, while still ticking the boxes on the tropes.

What’s it about?

A dark fantasy romance about an assassin and a dragon rider bound by fate and loss. Together they uncover dangerous secrets in a world
of fae, dragons and magic, where love and vengeance burn across lifetimes.

Are you enjoying it?

I’m enjoying it so far, even though I’m only about a quarter of the way through. Sometimes the fantasy jargon makes it a bit tricky to read, but I’m loving the challenge. I’ve heard there will be a second book, and I’m already getting excited for it.

What are you reading now?

White Trash Warlock by David R Slayton

Why did you choose this book?

I had heard about it from a few social media accounts that I follow and then StoryGraph started putting it in my recommended reads list.

What’s it about?

The main character is a magically gifted outcast, inheriting magical powers from his absent father. After a difficult childhood, he is living with his similarly gifted aunt in a trailer until his estranged brother calls asking for help. He is thrown into a situation far beyond what he is capable of, and the stakes are much higher than he ever expected.

Are you enjoying it?

Absolutely! I am nearly finished, and it has been a great read. There are some fantastic and diverse characters, snarky banter, action and a compelling plot.
It is also part of a series, so I am loving that I have at least four more books in this world.

What are you reading now?

Spring Clean for the Peach Queen by Sasha Wasley

Why did you choose this book?

I wanted something lighthearted and easy to read while on holidays and this was previously one of our book club books so I thought I would give it a try.

What’s it about?

Set in a small farming community in Australia, it’s about a young woman whose aspiration was to become a famous actor but through certain life-changing events, decides to go back to her hometown (a small orchard farming community) to declutter her life, hide from the world she was living in
and find her true self again. It is a light read while still having some substance and explores several complex relationships along the way.

Are you enjoying it?

Yes. I enjoy the Australian setting, the author’s style, the humour and kindness that the story is told with and (fingers crossed) the inevitable happy ending

What are you reading now?

The Good Turn by Dervla McTiernan

Why did you choose this book?

This is book three of the ‘Cormac Reilly’ series. The first two were fantastic so I was very excited to start this one!

What’s it about?

As mentioned, the book follows Detective Cormac Reilly as he solves murders in Ireland. This book is a little different however and follows his protégé Peter Fisher. Peter has been exiled to Roundstone and must work alongside his estranged father. But when Peter arrives, he finds things aren’t as they seem and corruption is rife. He must now try to unravel the web of lies he has stumbled upon.

Are you enjoying it?

I found this book a little slower to start than the first two but it has picked up pace and I am really enjoying it! Although we still see Cormac in this book, I’m really enjoying the different perspective from Peter and getting to know more of his story.

What are you reading now?

One Punch Man, Vol. 31

Why did you choose this book?

I am a huge fan of the ‘One Punch Man’ series. There is a lot of humour and intense action and I find the main character, Saitama, hilarious.

What’s it about?

It’s a Japanese manga where the character is a seriously over-powered hero who can defeat any adversary with just one punch. He is very jaded by not being able to find an opponent that takes more than one punch to defeat and finds getting to the shops to buy his shopping before they close more problematic than destroying a world-ending asteroid that’s about to hit
the planet.

Are you enjoying it?

I love this series. I’ve rewatched the first two seasons of the anime multiple times and can’t wait for each new volume of the manga
to arrive with our deliveries from our suppliers. If you find Japanese comedies funny, I highly recommend you give it a go.
