Don’t Let the Forest In by C.G. Drews
If you were stranded on a desert island and you could only have five books – what would they be?
This is such a tough question!!
An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
Queen Bee by Amalie Howard
Openly Straight by Bill Konigsberg
Can You Keep a Secret by Sophie Kinsella
Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein
Where is your favourite place to read?
On my couch with my dog and my cats!
Do you read one book at a time or multiple?
One at a time.
Do you use a bookmark or fold the corners of pages?
I fold pages on paperbacks, but I use bookmarks on hardcovers.
What sparked the idea for your novel, Carving Shadows Into Gold?
I originally created the character of Tycho in the ‘Cursebreaker series’, and when I first introduced him, I was planning to have another character kill him off. Unfortunately, as soon as I put Tycho on the page, I knew he needed his own story, and I had to write it. A new series was born!
Who are Tycho, Jax, and Callyn? And what connects them?
Tycho is the King’s Courier, which means he’s a high ranking nobleman who is trusted to carry the most secret, private messages from the king. Jax is a poor blacksmith living on the border between kingdoms, and his best friend, a baker named Callyn, lives nearby. When Tycho’s horse throws a shoe one afternoon, he seeks out Jax, the local blacksmith, not knowing that Jax and Callyn have just agreed to hide a message of treason against the king…
What can you tell us about the magical elements in this novel?
In this novel, many characters have access to magic, including Tycho. Unfortunately Jax and Callyn have been raised to believe that magic is dangerous. When Tycho uses magic to heal a bad injury to Jax’s hand, they’re forced to re-evaluate everything they believe about magic and the people who have it.
What book character would you be, and why?
Of the three characters in this book, I am probably most like Tycho. He cares about the people close to him, and he always wants to do the right thing.
If you could meet one author (living or dead) – who would it be and why?
I would love to meet Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, because her entire life seems so fascinating!
