Cinemas are now playing the film adaptation of Delia Owens’ 2018 novel Where the Crawdads Sing.
The story follows Catherine ‘Kya’ Clark, played by Daisy Edgar Jones (Normal People). The film is set in the 1950s in North Carolina, and follows abandoned child Kya, now forced to fend for herself in the marsh. Suspicion falls on Kya when a young man later dies. A trial begins against her for first-degree murder.
Delia Owens wrote Where the Crawdads Sing at 69 years old. It became a bestseller after Reese Witherspoon selected it for her book club. Reese Witherspoon has gone on to produce the film. First Match’s Olivia Newman will be directing, and Beasts of the Southern Wild’s Lucy Alibar has adapted the novel for the screen.
